On the northern corner of the San Juan Skyway is found the charming mountain town of Ridgway and this ‘Gateway to the San Juans’ will be your first opportunity to experience the closeness of the San Juan range as you approach from all points north. In the central part of Ridgway just two blocks off, ‘Sherman’, which is the main street running through the town, you will find the Southwest inspired architectural gem of a resort called the Chipeta Solar Springs Resort and Spa.
The resort was opened in 1993 by Jack and Patsy Young who were long-time residents of Colorado but who have also been involved in creating resorts in Hawaii, Fiji and Canada as well. It was in the early nineties after having to leave Kauai in the disastrous aftermath of hurricane Iniki that Jack became inspired by his trips to the cliff dwellings in nearby Mesa Verde and created the first 12 rooms of the Chipeta Resort. With great regularity additional segments have been added to the spa over the years and today the number of rooms has expanded to 33 with additional plans to build more yet in the planning stage.
The southwestern influence of the architecture can be seen everywhere you look with high ceilings, wooden beams, stone fireplaces, rough-hewn walls, Hopi art and terracotta tiles. This motif is immersed throughout the entire resort from the outside, to the common elements, to the individual rooms, the restaurant and bar and even to the central firepit, it’s unique teepees and seating areas.
The rooms are each unique but are divided in room types which are labeled as Standard rooms, Choice, Lodge Deluxe Rooms, Kiva Deluxe, Locha Studios and Spa Suites. Each of the room types are different but many have their own balconies, private hot tubs, gas log fireplaces, granite wet bars, HD satellite TV, jetted bath and showers with mexican tile ornamentation and many have views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains, Cimarron Mountains or local town views.
Your evenings will be special at the Chipeta Resort too as the restaurant experience will be among the finest in town and the special views from the highest point in the resort, the ‘Sky Bar’ are as special as they come. Many evenings at the ‘Sky Bar’ are accompanied by the sounds of live music and special concerts are often featured here as well.
The experience is not over yet however because Chipeta also has one of the finest spas to be found on the skyway. With 3000′ of treatment rooms, both single and couples massage rooms, steam room, outdoor solar heated treatment pools, and experienced and professional massage therapists, you will be relaxed in both mind and body.
